We have now spent a wonderful "christmas"-week here in Iquitos with Marit, Karen and Heidi (wonderful british girl who volunteers in Lima) who came to visit us from Lima. Christmas Eve we spent baking gingerbread, eating christmas porridge and watching the norwegian classic "3 nøtter til Askepott" (Cinderella). When Christmas rang in at 5 o`clock, we dressed up and went to get our Christmas feast dinner. In Peru they normally eat turkey at midnight, but the rebells that we are - we ordered pizza at 7!
We had a really good time eating and talking, and with candles and blinking christmaslights we actually got a taste of Christmas even in Amazonas. After dinner we walked up to the crowded main square "Plaza de Armas", and watched a bit of the Christmas service in the church. Afterwards we did a very norwegian thing: we dressed up a chair with presents an christmaslights, and danced around it singing christmas carols - trust us, it was more than one person that stopped outside our door. Afterwards we opened presents, ate gingerbread and panéton (sweet bread they eat a lot in Peru for christmas) and watched the fireworks at midnight. Christmas in the jungle do work!
The rest of the week we spend visiting a lot of different sites in and around Iquitos. The result is extremely good memories, funny photos and red shoulders.
The 25th: Quisticocha - laguna with animals living under horrible conditions. It was crowded, and people circeled around us to watch the gringas in bikini - woho!
So not scared...! |
The 26th: Dresshopping in Iquitos. With fashionshow and more fireworks during the evening.
The 27th: Pilpintuwasi - butterflypark: We tok a boat out to a small "comunidad", and walked to the park. It was boiling hot, we watched and learned a lot about the butterflies (the only live for max. 3 months) and the other animals rescued from being sold at the market. A monkey tried to steal Maias purse, and we were told more than once that they could kill us. Nice!
Can you spot the butterfly? |
The 28th: Monkey Island: The best experience. We took a speedboat out to this island, and was showed around more or less in the jungle. There were different kinds of monkeys all over the place, we played with them, fed them and discovered how humanlike they are. While walking around in the jungle looking at the plants and monkeys, we got to taste fresh fruits from the trees - mmm! We got eaten alive by the mosquitos, and the ants bite really hard. We considered staying there. That days` funny comment was when we were dropped of at a small comunity to catch a boat, there was also a delivery boat with beer. A woman was sure the hundreds of beers were ours, the 5 nineteen year old, white girls.....!
Who`s the animal? |
The 28th: Belén: We wanted to show where we work, so we took a motocarro down to Belén. The river had increased a lot. For example in Ellens sector (9) there was no longer streets of sand, but water. We payed for a small boattrip on the river. We got a fantastic view over Iquitos and Belén floating on the river Itaya. Afterwards we walked arouns most of the day at the marked, watching and trying out different specialities. We also got a lot of funny "gringa"- comments: "oo, carne blanca" (= white meat), "Ey, tengo marijuana" (I have marijuana) and "olala".
Now its the 29th, and we just sent the girls back to the big city after a wonderful week. Now a new year is waiting at the door step, and hopefully it will be a good year without "mala suerte"!
We hope you all had a Merry Christmas and we wish you a Happy New Year.
Besitos y abrazos de Maia y Ellen.
